PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATION

EXPERIENCE

Hi, I'm Fiona, a Registered Clinical Counsellor and doctoral candidate, I started working in the mental health field over 20 years ago, first on the Crisis Lines and various non-profit agencies, and later for the local health authority's, supporting people with substance use disorders, and youth experiencing suicidal ideation.  As my studies and strengths evolved, I began seeing more and more people with diverse trauma histories, until I found my most natural fit.

I have now been in private practice for over 15 years and work almost exclusively with people who've experienced any measure of grief or trauma.

Of particular interest to me is perinatal stress and trauma, post-partum depression and anxiety, and/or subsequent parenting and relationship challenges.  This could look like infertility, miscarriage, loss of a child, PCOS, mood instability and disorders, and many other experiences that can come up during the pre,  perinatal and post-partum period.

My approach to therapy is a holistic one, and I find using a combination of cognitive and somatic strategies the most effective, especially when navigating and reconciling grief and loss.

When I'm not practicing, I like to spend time in the mountains, hiking or skiing.  I play tennis and do pilates, love to read (about 1 book a week!) and be with family and good friends.

OUR WORK TOGETHER

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING AND THERAPY

We'll work one-on-one to explore the challenges you're experiencing currently, and I'll tailor an approach to healing that benefits and feels right for you.

MANAGE THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS

We'll work on ways to help stop intrusive thoughts, soften overwhelming feelings, and create a strong sense of safety in self and in the world.

RELATIONSHIP COUNSELLING AND THERAPY

Occasionally it can be beneficial to do couple's work, and in this context, we work together to help your partner best support you and your therapeutic goals.

LEARN TO TOLERATE STRESS AND DISCOMFORT

Using both cognitive (CBT) and somatic-centred practices, our work together will help you learn to tolerate different measures of discomfort and distress.

PARENTING SUPPORT

Chronic stress and trauma can impact communication and engagement between parents.  In these sessions, we'll explore parenting styles, approaches, differences and alignments.

PROCESS TRAUMA

Rooted in attachment, neuroscience, affect regulation, embodiment research and the wisdom of the natural world, we'll take the necessary time to work through painful lived experiences, images, flashbacks, nightmares, and any other distressing memory or sensation.

MAKE NEW CONNECTIONS

Connection with friends, family, activities and interests, along with other health practitioners are vitally important to your health and well-being.  We'll work together to build a strong self-care network.

LEARN STRATEGIES TO COPE WITH GRIEF AND LOSS

Complicated grief and loss can be so powerful it becomes all consuming.  This state of being can disrupt our ability to think, feel, and communicate clearly, cause us to withdraw from the people and things we once experienced joy with, and cause our physical self to shut down from the weight of despair. We'll find strategies to help you cope with grief.

RESPOND DIFFERENTLY

Our work together will help you learn to respond instead of react, as we work on changing unhelpful narratives and building emotional regulation skills.

ESTABLISH SAFETY IN SELF AND THE WORLD

Often after a traumatic experience, we lose a sense of safety within ourselves, and the whole world can feel unsafe.  Our work together will help turn down the volume on those sensations and perceptions of the world.
